Convection zone — where it appears
Named by 2 essays across 2 fields — each of them below, with the objects they name alongside it.
A planet read in the ashes of its star
A white dwarf's gravity drags every heavy element out of its visible surface, so a white dwarf showing magnesium, iron and silicon is swallowing rock now. Its spectrum is the only place where the bulk composition of a rocky body round another star can be read element by element. But each element sinks at its own rate, so the ratio seen depends on when in the meal the spectrum was taken — and only the hottest hydrogen white dwarfs say.
A spot whose missing heat goes nowhere
A sunspot blocks most of the energy trying to come up beneath it, and a large group visibly dims the whole Sun by a thousandth. Energy is conserved, so the blocked flux ought to come out somewhere else, and for a century observers looked for the bright ring around every spot. There is none to speak of. The heat has gone into the rest of the convection zone, spread so fast and so widely that the surface cannot notice, and it will stay there for longer than human history. For the time being the Sun simply is fainter, without any contradiction.
