E mode polarisation — where it appears
Named by 2 essays across one field — each of them below, with the objects they name alongside it.
An amplitude and a depth that arrive multiplied
The microwave background's temperature fluctuations are the primordial ones damped by everything that scattered them since. The damping is uniform, so a smaller starting amplitude and more scattering produce identical maps — and separating them requires a signal from a handful of the largest angular scales, where the Galaxy's own emission is larger than what is being measured.
Polarised only where the glow was lopsided
An electron bathed in light from every side scatters it unpolarised, and so does one bathed in light brighter on one side. Only a glow brighter along one axis than across it leaves a polarisation behind, and in the microwave background that glow existed for a short time, in a thin part of a thin shell, because the plasma was moving.
