Concept

Characteristic luminosity — where it appears

The luminosity at the knee of a Schechter function, where the power law gives way to an exponential cut-off. It is the most-quoted parameter of a galaxy census and the least robustly determined, because it sits at the foot of an exponential where a fit is least constrained.
