Concept

Circumgalactic medium — where it appears

The diffuse gas surrounding a galaxy out to roughly the radius of its dark matter halo, between the disc and intergalactic space. It holds much of a galaxy's baryons and metals and is traced by absorption lines and by the Sunyaev–Zel'dovich effect.
