Cold dark matter — where it appears
Named by 2 essays across one field — each of them below, with the objects they name alongside it.
Also named here as dark subhalo, epicyclic overdensity, stellar stream, stream gap — the same set of essays touches all of them, so they are one junction rather than several.
A hole that says mass times time
A gap in a stellar stream is the strongest evidence available that dark subhaloes exist, and its depth depends on the perturber's mass, the impact parameter and the elapsed time only through one combination. Two of those three are unobservable, so a gap is a measurement of a product.
A spectrum that counts what no single gap can
One gap in a stellar stream measures a subhalo's mass multiplied by an unknown time. A stream crossed by dozens of them measures something better — how many subhaloes of each size there are — but only as a statistic of the whole stream's density, where no feature can be pointed to and one stream is one throw of the dice.
