Post-starburst — where it appears
Named by 2 essays across one field — each of them below, with the objects they name alongside it.
A crossing time that is the filter's
The emptiness of the gap between the two galaxy populations was read as a timescale, and the reading used one colour. Each passband remembers star formation for a different length of time, so the same galaxies give a crossing time of one billion years in the ultraviolet and three in the optical — and the disagreement between two filters is the measurement the single filter could not make.
A flare rate a hole cannot afford for long
Tidal disruption flares are found in galaxies that stopped forming stars within the last billion years far more often than those galaxies' numbers allow — by factors estimated between thirty and two hundred. Each proposed cause can be priced. A dense cluster from the burst would need ten times the hole's mass of new stars inside a parsec; a triaxial nucleus would give twenty times too much; and any excess of a hundred, kept for the length of the phase, would feed a million-solar-mass hole several times its own mass.
