Stellar mass function — where it appears

The number of galaxies per unit volume per unit stellar mass — the quantity theories of galaxy formation predict, where a survey measures a luminosity function. Converting one into the other costs a mass-to-light ratio per galaxy, which runs by a factor of six with colour and changes the shape rather than the units.
