Surface brightness dimming — where it appears

The fall of an extended source's brightness per unit solid angle as the fourth power of one plus the redshift. It makes distant galaxies and cluster gas very hard to see, and the Sunyaev–Zel'dovich effect escapes it because it is measured as a fraction of a background dimmed by the same factor.
