Concept

Atmospheric escape — where it appears

The loss of a planet's atmosphere to space, by evaporation, by hydrodynamic outflow, or by ions being picked up by the stellar wind. Each channel is driven by the star's high-energy output rather than by anything the planet does. Which channel dominates depends on the planet's gravity and on the star's high-energy output rather than on its magnetic field.
