Bound-free absorption — where it appears

Absorption of a photon energetic enough to detach an electron from an atom or ion altogether. It produces a sharp edge at the threshold energy and a smooth falling opacity above it, and the negative hydrogen ion's edge at 1.64 microns is where cool stars are most transparent.
