Kinetic energy — where it appears

The energy a body has because it moves: half its mass times its speed squared, or for a rotation half its moment of inertia times its angular rate squared. At fixed angular momentum a spin about a heavier axis carries less of it, which decides where dissipation leaves a spinning body.
