Lunar laser ranging — where it appears

The timing of laser pulses returned from the retroreflectors left on the Moon, which fixes the Earth–Moon distance to a few millimetres. It shows the Moon receding at 3.83 centimetres a year, which is the tidal transfer of the Earth's rotation into the lunar orbit made directly visible.
