Radiative transfer — where it appears

The account of how radiation is absorbed, emitted and scattered on its way through material, in which optical depth rather than distance is the variable. The depth at which the optical depth reaches about two thirds is where the emergent light comes from, which is why a star's surface is a depth rather than a surface.
