Tachocline — where it appears

The thin shear layer in the Sun between the differentially rotating convection zone and the rigidly rotating radiative interior, at about 0.7 of the radius. It is a few per cent of the radius thick, which is much thinner than viscous spreading over the Sun's life allows, and it is where the magnetic cycle is generally thought to be generated.
