Adaptive optics — where it appears

Measuring the wavefront distortion the atmosphere imposes and applying its negative with a deformable mirror, faster than the distortion changes. It is bounded by three numbers, none of them the mirror: the loop rate the wind demands, the angle over which one measurement stays valid, and the availability of a star inside it.
