Concept

Atmospheric drag — where it appears

The force a satellite feels from the residual gas at orbital altitude, falling off with height as fast as the density does. It removes orbital energy, which lowers the orbit and speeds the satellite up, and it acts through the centre of pressure rather than the centre of mass.
