Concept

Doppler broadening — where it appears

The Gaussian widening of a spectral line by the thermal motion of the absorbing atoms, whose width is set by the temperature and the atomic mass. It is the same for every star of a given temperature, which is why a line wider than it says something about rotation, pressure or turbulence instead.
