Concept

Pressure broadening — where it appears

The widening of a spectral line by collisions with neighbouring particles, whose rate follows the density and hence the surface gravity. It is what distinguishes a giant from a dwarf at the same temperature, and it converts a spectrum into an absolute magnitude and therefore into a distance.
