Lightness number — where it appears
Named by 2 essays across one field — each of them below, with the objects they name alongside it.
Also named here as solar sail — the same set of essays touches all of them, so they are one junction rather than several.
A drive with no rocket equation
Radiation pressure and solar gravity both fall as the inverse square, so their ratio is a constant of the vehicle. A sun-facing sail therefore only rescales the central mass — it has to be tilted to do anything, and the best tilt throws away sixty-two per cent of the thrust.
A climb out of the ecliptic paid for in orbits
A solar sail can tilt its orbit without propellant by leaning against sunlight and changing which way it leans twice an orbit. Each orbit then adds the same few degrees whatever its size, so the climb runs faster the closer to the Sun the sail goes. Nothing in the orbit fixes how close that can be. The sail film's temperature does.
