Momentum dumping — where it appears
Named by 2 essays across one field — each of them below, with the objects they name alongside it.
Also named here as reaction wheel — the same set of essays touches all of them, so they are one junction rather than several.
The spin that has to be put somewhere
A spacecraft holding an attitude is not resisting a force. It is absorbing a slow, one-directional trickle of angular momentum from the gradient of gravity across its own body, from sunlight, from the last of the atmosphere — and every store it has for that trickle fills up.
The one axis the field will not take
A satellite that keeps one face towards the Earth can empty its reaction wheels into the Earth's magnetic field with coils, using no propellant. Its own rotation, once an orbit, cancels every steady torque except those about one axis, the pitch axis normal to the orbit. In an orbit near the equator the field lies along that same axis, and a coil cannot push about the direction of the field.
