Concept

Tsiolkovsky equation — where it appears

The relation converting a required change of speed into a mass ratio, exponential because every kilogram of propellant is accelerated by the rest. It is why staging exists and why a small saving in required velocity change is a large saving in mass, and it contains no reference to gravity or to a trajectory.
